Desmond was born in Newmarket on 9th Sept.1922 to George William and Maud Mary WOODS (née MARSHALL) of 23 Laureate Terrace, Exning Road. (now 284 Exning Road). He was employed as a lathe turner.

In the 1939 register, at 23 Laureate Terrace were is father George W [31-1-1891] farrier/ARP warden; his mother Maud [9-11-1889]; sister Irene K.M. BROWN [3-7-1920] and her husband Albert E BROWN [27-11-1912] centrefuge operator at British Sugar Corp/ARP messenger. There are 3 closed records.


Enlisted in RAF on 9th January 1941 for training as a pilot. He eventually passed out from training as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.

Desmond was in Vickers Wellington Mk VIII, LB191, c/s TA-? of No 3 Operational Training Unit, Coastal Command. This aircraft went missing on a night Navex from RAF Haverford West. The crew of 6 N.C.O.s were all lost. It is not known if he had undertaken any missions against the enemy.
